Ever wonder what it would be like to have Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey as a working part of your household? In this beautifully produced short, Nico Vescio composes a grounded and realistic interpretation of how a big brother robot can exercise too much control.
OBi’s unique film style whispers even more to the subtle, futuristic themes as the more human characters interact with each other and the personal AI. Vescio explains, “I think the real inspiration came from a short film I saw where the entire short was shown in split screen, meaning we saw multiple different people and events in separate places shown on screen all at the same time. I wanted to make something in honor of that unique story element.
Vescio continues to describe exactly why OBi is perhaps a very realistic point of fear, “Im really afraid of things that take human form, but are not human, more or less demented/distorted versions of humans. Literally the worst! I hate mannequins and dolls and anything that is bigger, taller, and smarter than me haha. OBi fits this description, he controls everything and could kill me in a second.”
Want to see how this story ends? Catch OBi on the big screen on Saturday, October first at The Oaks Theater! Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the lights will go down at 7:30 pm.
